Duke of Edinburgh 100 Mile Bike Ride

Duke of Edinburgh 100 Mile Bike Ride

17 May 2022

DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION AWARD-CENTURY BIKE RIDE

The William Henry Smith school Century Bike Ride was a complete success for the two students who took part and  completed the ride and evidenced all the requirements needed for their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition Award.

On the Saturday morning the students and four staff set off from Inverkip Marina along a stunning coastal cycle path, through forest trails and riverside tracks all the way to Glasgow. As they day wore on the boys persevered through some terrible weather conditions, including torrential rain and 40 mile per hour winds, making the journey a truly arduous task. However, our students remained resilient and finished the day past their target goal of 50 miles for day one.

After a good nights rest and a filling breakfast they rolled out again in much brighter conditions. They travelled through the Falkirk Tunnel and over the aqueducts, while taking in the magnificent scenery. At lunchtime they found a peaceful spot by the river where the boys cooked for everyone using camping stoves. At the end of the 100 miles they finished their challenge at Edinburgh Castle, capping off a rewarding experience, and an outstanding achievement for these young men.
