Thematic Learning
At WHSS, we embrace a thematic approach to learning that engages students in lower and middle school through carefully chosen driver subjects. Our curriculum focuses on history and geography, fostering curiosity about the past and encouraging students to explore key events and historical figures.
Chronologically sequenced, our history curriculum allows students to connect knowledge across time periods and compare local, national, and global histories. The geography curriculum supports this progression, enhancing understanding of the world.
Students participate in thematic learning sessions weekly, with opportunities for cross-curricular application through art, design technology, and food technology. Practical exercises and field trips deepen their learning experiences, while explicit modelling of subject-specific vocabulary and skills helps integrate new knowledge. Regular evaluation and celebration of best practices ensure continual improvement, cultivating critical thinking skills and the ability to analyse primary and secondary sources.
