At William Henry Smith Specialist College, we are committed to ensuring our website is accessible and inclusive for all users. We want every visitor to be able to access the information they need, regardless of ability, technology, or circumstance.

 

Our Commitment

We aim for our website to be:

  • Easy to navigate using a keyboard or screen reader

  • Clear and consistent across all pages

  • Understandable, with plain English used wherever possible

  • Accessible across different devices and browsers

  • Compatible with assistive technologies such as screen magnifiers, voice recognition software, and text-to-speech tools

 

Technical Standards

We aim to meet or exceed the standards of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and user-friendly for everyone.

 

Areas for Improvement

While we strive for full accessibility, we are aware that some parts of the website are not yet fully accessible:

  • Some downloadable documents, particularly PDFs, may not be fully compatible with screen readers

  • Some images may not have appropriate alternative text

  • Videos may not always include captions or transcripts

  • Third-party content (e.g. embedded maps or calendars) may not meet the same accessibility standards

We are actively reviewing and updating our content to address these issues.

 

What We’re Doing

We are working closely with our website developer to:

  • Audit the site regularly for accessibility issues

  • Provide training and guidance for staff creating content

  • Ensure all new content meets current accessibility standards
