Sue Ackroyd (1)

As CEO of The Smith Foundation—which includes The School & Sixth Form, our Specialist College, and our Children’s Home, Boothroyd—I am deeply passionate about transforming the lives of children and young adults. Our Foundation is a vibrant, multi-site community providing outstanding education, care, health, and therapy, all built on strong relationships and a trauma-informed approach. This means we recognise the impact of past experiences on a child’s emotional and behavioural responses, and we create environments where safety, trust, and connection come first. We look beyond presenting behaviours, always asking why, and we prioritise continuous learning, compassion, and meaningful connections. We are committed to leading change, championing mental health, and fostering a culture of emotional well-being across all schools and settings, always with the goal of improving quality of life for children, young adults, and families.

My journey in this field began in 1987, when I discovered a deep sense of purpose in my work in residential care. Over the years, I progressed into leadership, bridging both care and education. I have served as Deputy Principal, leading education and care, before becoming Principal, and now CEO and Executive Principal. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to the belief that education is a powerful force—one that opens minds, builds resilience, and creates a sense of belonging. However, above all else, our role is to provide a safe, nurturing, and hopeful environment where children and young adults feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

I believe in the power of strong leadership, authenticity, continuous self-improvement and the strength in vulnerability. At The Smith Foundation, we strive for excellence not just for our students, but for our staff, families, and the wider community. Where we can extend our reach to support others, we do—because we have the experience, the knowledge, and the responsibility to share what we have learned and continue to learn.

Outside of my professional life, I am married, a proud mother of two wonderful sons, and a devoted grandmother. I am also committed to caring for my mother, who is living with dementia.

Fitness plays a significant role in my life, and I exercise five times a week focussing in on strength training, Olympic lifting, speed and agility, and kickboxing. I am currently working toward my brown belt, a challenge that keeps me focused and disciplined. Exercise has been transformative for my physical and mental well-being, particularly in managing the challenges of menopause and the demands of leadership.

I believe in work-life brilliance—striving to be the best version of myself while inspiring those around me to do the same. I am always eager to learn, reflect, and grow, and I have found great value in both life and fitness coaching, applying these principles to my personal and professional life. My leadership is driven by a commitment to compassion, resilience, and authenticity, and I hope to inspire others to embrace these values in their own journeys.
